Above Ground Swimming Pool Pre-Purchase Checklist

Thinking about an above ground pool? Here are some pre-purchase things to consider. Our professional installers will be happy to build an above ground pool on your property but there are important issues to research.

  • Some areas require you stay a certain distance from your property line. Call your local zoning department to clarify if this is an issue for you.
  • Some areas require fencing. Again, your zoning department can answer this question for you.
  • We excavate using a Bobcat skid loader. We need a clearance of 7’ to get into the yard and cannot go over sidewalks or driveways or onto neighboring property.
  • We leave dirt piled neatly on your property. Think about where you would like it placed, but realize we cannot move it too far.
  • Make sure you call your Public Utilities Commission. Many provide a free service of marking underground lines so there are no nasty surprises when the excavation starts. They usually only require a few days notice.
  • Find out if you need building permits. Again, a quick call to your local building or zoning department can give you your answer.
  • Pumps cannot run on electric cords. Plan to run a safe, GFCI protected line immediately upon completion of the installation.
  • Measure your yard to see what pool will fit. For example, if you are considering a 24’ round pool, place a screwdriver where you would like the middle of the pool. Use a roll-up steel tape and attach the beginning loop to screwdriver. Pull it out to a little over 12’ then use the attached tape like a tether line and walk a circle. You can use spray paint or chalk to mark the circle and see if your pool would fit. Avoid going too close to walls, house, trees, or other obstruction.
  • Look up! Make sure your pool is not going to be under or within a 15’ vertical drop of any overhead power or utility line.
  • If your yard is heavily sloped, it does not mean you cannot have a pool, but there may be some extra measures you need to take regarding retaining walls. Ask your Pleasure Pools specialist to help you with this issue.
